A key feature of our school is that we are a vibrant learning community where everyone is committed to learning today for a fulfilling life tomorrow. We provide a rich curriculum that extends well beyond the classroom and delivers high quality teaching ensuring we cater for every student’s talents and abilities. Our students excel not only academically but also socially developing wider skills that allow them to become ambitious, capable learners ready to learn throughout their lives.
The school is recognised as having a very positive ethos based on our shared expectations that all students are Ready, Respectful and Responsible. We endeavour to develop young citizens that are ethically informed, enterprising, creative, healthy and confident, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.
Partnership with Croesyceiliog School, Cwmbran
King Henry VIII School entered a formal partnership with Croesyceiliog School, Cwmbran March 2020. We have established a partnership committee that is made up of equal numbers of governors from each school, along with the Executive Headteacher and Heads of School. The committee meets on a termly basis and has set clear terms of reference and success criteria. The success criteria will focus on five key strands that include standards, developing leadership capacity, teaching and learning, wellbeing and equity and school growth and diversity.
The Executive Headteacher provides an update to the partnership committee on the progress towards the success criteria at each meeting. Verbal reports and minutes are shared with each governing body so all are well informed of the progress of the partnership.
Feedback from leaders at both schools have found the formal partnership to be extremely helpful particularly in developing shared approaches to leadership and management of secondary schools during a global pandemic. Key strengths that have been identified included:
- Developing our response to the COVID-19 crisis, sharing the workload in developing safe measures and documentation for students, staff, parents, guardians and governors.
- Development of leadership capacity across both schools. Senior and middle leaders with similar roles are routinely sharing leadership experiences and resources to improve the quality of education at both schools. This is very much a two way process
- Designing virtual approaches to Year 6 into Year 7 transition, open evenings and parental consultation events
- Sharing approaches to wellbeing and equity so we can support all our learners and in particular our most vulnerable
- Refining our blended learning provision, again sharing resources and examples of best practice, learning from each other
The open nature of the partnership and the willingness of both school communities to share expertise and resources has certainly contributed to our school community.
